Blepharoplasty

Eyelid Surgery in Toronto

North Toronto Eye Care offers upper and lower lid surgery for patients who want to battle the signs of aging or enhance the appearance of their eyelids.  This procedure is known as blepharoplasty or an eyelid lift.

Blepharoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed on the face. Benefits of the procedure include a more youthful, awake appearance and an enhanced field of vision for those whose eyelids may block their peripheral vision.

Dr. Hess is an ophthalmologist with fellowship training in Oculoplastics.  She has done thousands of eyelid procedures and can meet with you to discuss whether blepharoplasty is the right choice for you.

Combat Visible Signs of Upper and Lower Eyelid Aging

If you are experiencing puffiness or droopiness of the eyelids, then blepharoplasty might be right for you.  Blepharoplasty aims to combat the following concerns:

  • Droopiness of eyelid skin
  • Difficulty applying makeup (eyeshadow)
  • Eyes appearing sad or tired
  • Visual obstruction
  • Puffiness or dark circles below the eyes

What is the goal of blepharoplasty?

Reverse the evidence of aging for your Upper and Lower eyelids by:

  • Removing excess drooping skin from the upper eyelids
  • Removing excess or bulging fat pockets
  • Smoothing out wrinkles
  • Correct dark circles in the lower lids

In some cases, blepharoplasty may be a medically necessary procedure, particularly in the upper eyelids.

About the Blepharoplasty Procedure

An outpatient procedure, blepharoplasty does not require hospital stay – from start to finish, a blepharoplasty takes about 75 minutes to complete. Patients receive local anesthesia to numb the area so there is very minimal discomfort during the procedure.  It is possible to have “twilight anesthesia” during your procedure, where an anesthesiologist would give you a relaxing medication through an intravenous to provide an added level of relaxation for your procedure. Your surgeon will then remove the excess skin and fat, as well as tighten the eyelids to create a more youthful appearance.  Any incisions will be carefully stitched when the procedure is completed.

Each blepharoplasty is different, based on the goals and needs of the individual patient. It is important to select an experienced surgeon with an understanding of the eyelid anatomy to attain the best results possible.

Blepharoplasty Recovery

Once your procedure is complete, you will be transferred to the recovery room. The nursing staff will monitor your progress and once the anesthetic wears off you can go home, accompanied by family or friends.

When you are home, you should rest for the next 72 hours.  It is important to apply ice compresses as frequently as possible over the next 72 hours, and to keep your head elevated, as both of these will reduce swelling and bruising around your eyes. Bruising and swelling are normal, and should last 1-2 weeks at the most.  You will see your surgeon after 1 week, when your sutures from upper eyelid surgery will generally be removed. Lower eyelid sutures are dissolvable and do not need to be removed. Pain is generally mild, but your doctor will prescribe pain medication that you can use during this time of recovery.
