Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Fish, and Vitamin D rich Foods may have a Protective Role in AMD.

Understanding risk factors in AMD development and progression can help us prevent AMD or stop it from getting worse. Nutrition has shown to play a vital role in eye health and AMD, and this area of study is actively being researched today. Recent US studies including: The Women’s Health Study and the “Carotenoids in Age Related Eye Disease Study” (CAREDS), have shown that eating vitamin D rich foods and fish may have a protective role in AMD. Fish sources include tuna, salmon, sardines, trout and herring. Vitamin D rich foods also include fish, as well as milk and fortified foods such as margarine and cereal. The consumption of these foods were shown to potentially prevent the initial onset and delay the progression of AMD.
