RLE is a procedure where the natural clear lens is replaced with an artificial lens to correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and presbyopia.
RLE is similar to cataract surgery in that it involves removing the natural lens, but before it becomes a cataract. As a result RLE is not an OHIP insured surgery.
Replacing the natural lens with an artificial lens is done to correct your glasses or contact lens prescription and therefore reduce your dependence on glasses.
Ideal candidates are those over 40 years of age and who are not good candidates for LASIK, but want to reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
You can choose from monofocal, multifocal, or toric lenses depending on your vision needs.
Recovery typically involves a few weeks of using eye drops and avoiding strenuous activities.
