Cataract surgery involves removing the eye’s cloudy natural lens and replacing it with a clear artificial lens. It’s one of the most common surgeries in Canada.

You’ll need to follow pre-operative instructions, such as fasting after midnight before the surgery, and removing all makeup. Your eye surgeon and cataract team will provide detailed guidance including use of prescription eye drops.

Cataract surgery is typically a quick, outpatient procedure. You will be awake but under local anesthesia. Advanced technology such as Femtosecond Laser-Assisted surgery may be used to enhance precision.

While complications are rare, risks include infection, inflammation, and potential vision issues. Post-operative care, including using prescribed eye drops and attending follow-up appointments, helps mitigate these risks.

This depends on the type of lens implant chosen. Premium (refractive) lenses may reduce or eliminate the need for glasses, but standard lenses might still require corrective eyewear for certain tasks.

Basic cataract surgery is covered by OHIP. However, advanced technology or premium lens implants might involve additional costs.

You’ll need to use prescribed eye drops and avoid strenuous activities for a few weeks. Your surgeon will give you detailed instructions during follow-up visits. Consult our cataract team for more details and guidance.
