Cataract Surgery Pricing and Insurance

Cataracts are a common condition that impacts vision as we age. Vision can often be maintained from the use of glasses and magnifying lenses for a time, but as cataracts progress, they begin to have an impact on day-to-day tasks. At this point, surgery is recommended.

Surgery is the only present treatment for cataracts and is extremely common and safe. Cataract surgery is an effective way to restore vision and can eliminate or greatly reduce dependency on glasses to see clearly.

How much does cataract surgery cost?

The pricing of cataract surgery can change based on surgery customization and intraocular (IOL) lens type. Our practice offers options for the use of advanced technology and Premium Lens Implants, which may impact the overall cost of the procedure. Unlike monofocal intraocular lenses, our premium lens options allow for a more customized vision profile, with options to reduce the need for reading glasses, astigmatism correction, and more. Traditional cataract surgery with monofocal intraocular lenses may be covered by insurance, as discussed below.

Cataract Surgery and the Ontario Health Insurance Program

The cost of traditional cataract surgery and the use of a monofocal intraocular lens is covered by the OHIP. However, there are options for premium intraocular implants, advanced diagnostics, and laser-assisted cataract surgery that are considered enhancements and may not be covered by insurance. Our knowledgeable staff will assist patients to make an educated decision regarding their procedure preferences based on factors like budget, condition, and vision goals.

What options are covered by OHIP, and what are the non-insured options?

Cataract Consultations: Helping You to Make Important Decisions for your Vision and Health

It takes time to make the decision to have surgery. As cataracts develop, it is possible to maintain vision with corrective eyewear or medication. However, cataracts worsen over time, which happens at a different rate for everyone. Surgery is the only permanent option to treat cataracts and is most effective when cataracts begin to impact day to day life.

If you or a loved one have begun to develop cataracts, a consultation is the best option for learning about treatment options, surgery costs, and how to achieve your desired vision outcomes. Our staff is committed to providing compassionate care and helping each of our patients to accomplish an improved quality of life.
