Cataract Surgery in Ontario expected to more then double by 2036

An interesting study outlined on the ICES website, brought an issue that many cataract surgeons have been noticing over the past few years to light. Cataract surgery is one of the most frequently performed procedure in Ontario, and considering that each patient usually requires at least 2 surgeries in there life time, the surgical time required to treat patients will become a hot commodity. According to the study “projecting the growth of cataract surgery over the next 25 years” which was recently published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, the number of cataract surgeries will more then double by 2036 and for patients older then 85 years old will more then triple. It’s exceedingly important for hospitals to be prepared for this increase, and planning must be done.
