Keep Your Eyes Safe This Winter

While you probably know about the importance of eye protection during the sunny summer months, the winter can bring about a number of eye concerns as well — dry eye, photokeratitis and more. A study published in Archives of Dermatology even determined that out of thousands skiers and snowboarders surveyed, most only took minimal or occasional precautions against the sun. Learn about some of the steps you can take to protect your eyes during the winter months.

Top 3 Winter Eye Safety Tips

  1. Wear sunglasses. While it may not feel warm or sunny outside, the sun’s harmful UV rays are just as dangerous during the winter as they are during the summer. Snow can even reflect up to 80% of the sun’s rays, leaving you increasingly susceptible to UV damage. Make sure to wear sunglasses that reflect 99-100% of UV rays when you spend time outdoors this winter.
  2. Keep your eyes moist. The dry winter air combined with indoor heat can dry eyes out significantly, leaving patients susceptible eye redness, irritation and discomfort. Luckily, there are a number of different ways you can help combat this dryness. A humidifier can help reintroduce moisture to your environment, and sitting farther away from heat sources can help avoid dryness. Artificial tears can be another effective option to alleviate dry eyes in the wintertime.
  3. Use goggles when participating in winter activities. Activities like skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling are a big part of the winter months for many people. If you plan on hitting the slopes this winter, it’s important to make sure you’re using the proper eye protection. Goggles not only keep your eyes safe from the sun’s harmful rays, but can offer from protection from potential hazards like dirt, slush and ice.
